This document shows how we form and join letters. The children are taught to always start lower case letters on the line to make the flick (entry stroke) and finish with the kick (exit stroke).

It is important that children work on making the size of each letter appropriate, ensuring that the letters with ascenders (b, d, f, h, k, l, t) are taller than the others and that the descenders (f, g, j, p, q, y) go below the line they are writing on. Capital letters are tall so they are clearly a capital even if they are the same shape as the lower case letter eg c, C and p, P.

As they start writing simple words, the children are shown that the ‘kick’ on one letter turns into the flick on for the next letter so they join the letter up. Some letters are easier to join than others so children are taught specific joins then need lots of time time to practise and reinforce.
